What I read for the month of August is coming at ya a little early this month because… we’re doing a Goodreads Link Up! I’m not sure if you’re as obsessed with stalking seeing what other people are reading as I am, but Goodreads is SO awesome for it. It’s also why my To Be Read list is seriously humongous. We’re talking 1k+ books at least. But what I’m getting at here is go copy and paste your Goodreads profile URL, and add it to our fun little linky at the bottom, share your favorite books in the comments, and make some new reading buddies!
I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella | ★★★★ |This was a super fun read. I listened to it on the plane when I was flying in Dallas, and I’m glad I did. I needed something light-hearted and not heavy so I could catch a wink or two of shut-eye. This would be a great beach read, or travel companion, and I really liked the twist at the end!

The Pure Gold Baby by Margaret Drabble | ★★ | Oh my gosh this was so boring. I’m sorry but I just was not interested in this at all. I had to give it up, there’s just too many books I’d rather be reading.

I Was Told There’d Be Cake by Sloane Crosley | ★★ (2.5) | Okay, so if Chelsea Handler and some not-funny person had a baby, that baby would be Sloane Crosley. Girlfriend thinks she’s hysterical (I listened to the audiobook version and you can totally tell by her inflection when she thinks she’s being funny) but she’s not. I didn’t laugh much and just didn’t get into this. I get it, you’re Jewish. Your family is weird. Maybe if I didn’t already listen to Chelsea Handler she would have been funnier, but I just wasn’t feeling this one.

The Black Eyed Blonde by Benjamin Black | ★★★ | This was alright, I liked the noir feel of this book, but honestly I’m finding that I’m just not into mysteries as much as I thought. Or maybe I haven’t found the right “series” yet. I really liked Nancy Drew. Is there an adult version of that? Okay, sorry, back to the book. I think where this fell down to me was the lack of… excitement. The blonde bombshell (Claire) who comes to the main character (Phillip) to find her missing man, but there’s no real thrill. It’s pretty cut and dry, and the storyline is pretty predictable. It’s my understanding that this book is part of a series that is being resurrected, so perhaps this is just a speed-bump in a better series to come.

Stiff by Mary Roach | ★★ | Truth be told, this is another book I’ve given up on. It just wasn’t what I wanted to be reading. It’s my book club’s pick this month (my in real life one, not Kay’s) and what an awful topic for summer! Dead bodies? Bodily functions after death? No thanks. Even Dave was like, “What are you listening to?!” when I had it on in the car.

I read Me Before You a couple of months ago and I still can’t stop thinking about how much I loved it! I’ve also wondered about I was Told There’d Be Cake, so I’m glad to see you gave it a good review!
Me Before You was great! I have a few others by Jojo Moyes on my list that I can’t wait to get into!
Looks like I need to read “I was told there’d be cake” :)
love your honesty :) i have ‘me before you’ on my never ending list – i might bump it up a bit now!
Haha, mine is never ending too! I definitely recommend it, it’s similar to TFIOS but maybe a bit darker.
Hi Jenn,
Love this post on good reads! I have been meaning to write a similar post on my blog about good reads since I find myself recommending it to friends and family so often. Also, I’ve read ‘Me Before You’ and was so touched by this story. It’s such an easy but moving read. My friend and I are in the beginning stages of creating our blog and we have enjoyed browsing yours for some inspiration. We’d love to have you check us out sometime at inPSYCHfulliving.com :)
I’m always so shocked when people aren’t already using Goodreads – it’s my favorite. Glad you’ve found some inspiration here – I’ll be sure to check your blog out too! :)
I love to follow other people on books! It’s hard to just find a recommendation if you’re not around someone who reads beyond the bestseller lists.
I’ll be giving lots of people a follow so I can build myself a better list.
Yay, glad it’s useful! I love seeing what other people are reading too.
I have Me Before You on my Kindle and ready to go for the beach this weekend (well, tonight…). I guess I need to check out I’ve Got Your Number, since that was your highest rated for the month!
I think I’ve Got Your Number is a perfect beach read, but obviously I loved Me Before You, so I’d recommend that over it for sure.
Love how honest you are!! I hate reading posts where every book was “SOOO good”
Haha, I’m glad that’s helpful! I wish that they were SOOO good sometimes, but well, sometimes they’re not ;)
I loved I’ve got your number!
Definitely my favorite this month, and glad I picked it considering my other reads weren’t so good.
Now I’m gonna have to set aside some time to go through everybody’s books! I’d suggest everybody read the Uglies series, it’s my FAVORITE.
Thanks for the recommendation, Breenah! I’ll add that to my list, I hadn’t heard of it!
Ahh love seeing new book lists that I can pull from. Will have to check these out!
Yay, let me know if you read any of them, Kay! :)
