My #BeautyStory: Pretty is as Pretty Does

Sponsored Post: I am being compensated by Lunchbox in partnership with Dove Beauty for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Growing up, my mom always told me, “Pretty is as pretty does.” You can be the most beautiful person on the outside, but if you’re ugly inside, you’re not beautiful.  It was a life lesson passed down to her by her paternal grandmother, who shared not only taking care of what was on the outside but working on the inside too. She always stressed how it was important to work on you as a person first, rather than be caught up in the beauty comparison game.

My mother had another strong woman in her life that impacted her: my maternal great grandmother, who taught her the importance of treasuring the skin you’re in. For her, it was all about Dove Lotion Bars, which made her skin radiant into even her twilight years. I remember growing up using these to gently cleanse both face and body and could always count on Dove to not irritate my sensitive skin.

A few months ago, I would have been ashamed to show you what I looked like without makeup. My skin decided to have a meltdown, and I too with it. I was getting a new crop of zits nearly every day. And not just a little zit, these were cystic acne that were deep and painful.

What I Read in April & Semi-Charmed Summer Challenge

I’m a little behind on getting my book post up for April, but I’ve still been reading lots! I read some winners this month, as well as a few duds. It happens and seems to, unfortunately, be happening a lot more recently. But in between the duds were a few gems, so read on to find out what they were! :)

What I Read: April 2015

I Am Having So Much Fun Without You by Courtney Maum – ★★ – This was just not enjoyable. A man has an affair and is whining about the loss of her… until he suddenly realizes how much he misses his wife. This happens just in time for her to figure out his affair, and so he tries to win her back. I did not enjoy the narrator and could not get into this book.

This is the first year in my lifetime that I’m not going to be home for the most patriotic holiday there is (at least to me)… the 4th of July. We’re going to be in Paris this year for the 4th. While I couldn’t be more excited to be traveling in Europe, it does make me a bit sad to miss a holiday I always celebrate with my family.

What I’m Wearing
Top: James Perse Sheer Slub Panel Shirt, thrifted
Jeans: Levi’s 501 CT in Cottontail
Shoes: SJP Lady Pumps in Geranium
Necklace: BaubleBar x Anthropologie (similar colors)

I began to realize this week that we’re going to have to make the most of Memorial Day this year in terms of getting our patriotism on. Even though that’s not until the end of the month, this holiday is one that always sneaks up on me.

Whole Foods Beauty Haul, First Impressions, & Giveaway

Product Sample: Complimentary products of my own choosing were provided in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own. :) Affiliate Links: If you click on a product below, I may make a very small commission.

I’ve been a Whole Foods shopper for as long as there’s been one in my area. Meaning… basically after I graduated college. One of the first things I did when I started shopping there was scope out the health & beauty aisles. I’ll admit that it’s been awhile since I truly took a look at their product offerings. Typically I pop in for my Dr. Bronner’s, sunscreen, and some bar soap for Dave, and then I’m onto the groceries.

That was, until, I found out about the Whole Body & Cosmetics sale that happened last weekend. Whole Foods in Bellevue invited me in for a little sneak peek and tour of their cosmetics and body offerings… and my list was scary long. I went in on Saturday morning prepared to conquer, and then had to stop myself from buying everything. Rough life, I’m telling ya.

So, what did I end up with you ask?  I thought I’d share with you what I’ve picked up, and my first impressions (considering I just got everything on Saturday) of the products thus far.

Wantable Style Edit: May 2015

Affiliate Links: If you click a link below, I may receive a credit if you sign up. I pay for this subscription.

I think you should realize by now that I get kind of excited about these new fashion subscription boxes. Honestly, I know I’m not the target audience (I have no problems shopping for myself…) but I still enjoy seeing what these “stylists” will pick for me. And if you haven’t heard of Wantable yet, they already offer a ton of interesting subscription boxes, like for fitness, makeup, and accessories.

What I find is that the longer you receive them, the better they are about learning your style. I’m hoping the same is true for Wantable’s new Style Edit service. They introduced this in April, and I promptly signed up. However, my first Style Edit was far from impressive. I think the clothing they sent, in concept, is good. The fit and price point? Not a fan.
